Millions of drivers stand to benefit from a new government initiative that aims to lower fuel costs. As part of the scheme, the approximately 8,350 fuel stations nationwide are now required to promptly notify customers of any price changes for petrol and diesel, ensuring transparency in pricing. This information will be shared with third-party websites and apps, enabling motorists to compare fuel prices conveniently from anywhere in the country.
The goal is to eventually provide real-time updates on fuel prices, offering drivers increased opportunities to save money over time. Previously, only 65% of UK fuel stations were covered by an interim scheme overseen by the Competition and Markets Authority. The newly launched ‘Fuel Finder’ program will extend coverage to all petrol stations, enforcing strict guidelines on price information disclosure. Non-compliant operators may face penalties of up to 1% of their global annual revenue.
The initiative comes in response to concerns that drivers have been paying inflated prices for fuel. Even a small price difference of 5p per liter between stations could save the average driver £2.75 per refueling. Edmund King, president of the AA motoring group, emphasized the importance of empowering consumers with pricing information, enabling them to make informed choices and potentially find more affordable fuel options nearby.
Industry experts such as Simon Williams, head of policy at the RAC, express optimism that the initiative will foster competition among retailers, ultimately leading to better value for drivers. As more of the country’s fuel stations update their prices daily, drivers will have easy access to information on the cheapest nearby options through various apps or navigation systems.
Currently, the national average price for unleaded fuel is at 132.1p per liter, while diesel stands at 141.2p. The initiative aims to create a more competitive market and drive down fuel prices for consumers across the UK.
