An 11-year-old boy uttered three alarming words following the alleged shooting of his father, who was killed for confiscating his Nintendo games console. Douglas Dietz, 42, was discovered deceased with a gunshot wound to the head in a quiet neighborhood in Duncannon Borough, Pennsylvania. His son, Clayton, now faces homicide charges.
According to court documents, Mr. Dietz’s wife awoke to a loud noise and a smell resembling fireworks in the bedroom. The boy then entered, exclaiming, “Daddy’s dead.” State troopers who arrived at the scene reported Clayton telling his mother, “I killed Daddy.”
Celebrating his 11th birthday, Clayton was said to have been furious after his father took away his Nintendo Switch a few days earlier. The court affidavit revealed that Clayton’s mother, Jillian, was next to Mr. Dietz in bed and discovered the tragic event when she turned on the lights and saw blood on the sheets.
Jillian attempted CPR while waiting for emergency services as Clayton shouted in the room. Despite their adoption of Clayton in 2018 and singing Happy Birthday to him the previous evening, the situation escalated when they instructed him to go to bed.
The family gun was reportedly stored in a locked drawer, with Clayton admitting to finding the key, unlocking it to locate his Nintendo Switch. The document detailed Clayton loading the gun, approaching his father’s side of the bed, removing the safety, and firing the weapon.
The 11-year-old confessed to not considering the consequences of his actions to police. He was promptly arrested and charged with criminal homicide, with a court hearing scheduled for January 22.
Reports indicated that Clayton’s parents had sought help for his escalating behavioral issues, including autism-related challenges such as sexual harassment, physical aggression, and theft. Despite their efforts, assistance was reportedly denied as Clayton did not meet the required criteria.
Following the incident, Susquenita School District released a statement offering support to students affected by the tragedy in the close-knit community. The neighbors expressed shock, describing the Dietz family as kind and reserved, with one saying, “I didn’t expect this.”
