Donald Trump’s controversial attempts to acquire Greenland have sparked discussions about potentially boycotting the upcoming men’s football World Cup in the US this summer.
There is growing pressure on Keir Starmer from MPs to take a strong stance against the US President following his threats of imposing tariffs on the UK. Trump recently announced plans to impose 10% tariffs on several countries, including the UK, starting in February if they oppose his Greenland acquisition bid. Additionally, he warned of escalating tariffs on NATO allies to 25% by June 1 if the deal for Greenland is not finalized.
Conservative former minister Simon Hoare and Liberal Democrat MP Luke Taylor have suggested that England, Scotland, and any other qualifying home nations should consider withdrawing from the tournament in protest against Trump’s actions. Hoare also proposed the idea of canceling the King’s scheduled state visit to the US.
The pressure intensified after Trump criticized Britain’s Chagos deal, calling it an “act of GREAT STUPIDITY” and labeling the decision to cede the Chagos Island as an “act of total weakness” that could be exploited by China and Russia.
During a House of Commons session, Hoare emphasized the need to understand Trump’s motivations, highlighting his sensitivity, ego, and aversion to embarrassment. The MPs discussed potential actions like canceling the state visit and boycotting the World Cup to send a message to Trump.
Scotland is set to play its first World Cup match in almost three decades, with England starting against Croatia on June 17. The tournament will kick off on June 11, with Scotland’s games scheduled in Massachusetts and Florida, and England’s matches in Texas, Massachusetts, and New Jersey.
