“Major Investment in Northern Rail Services Announced”

Working individuals have long been neglected by our economy.

The previous administration opted for turmoil and insecurity rather than prioritizing the improvement of living standards. They made the choice to overlook investments in public transportation like trains, buses, and roads. They also neglected to support clean energy initiatives, future job opportunities, and vital sectors such as education, healthcare, and local communities. Without stability and financial backing, the economy remains stagnant.

Residents in the North have experienced firsthand the adverse effects of inadequate investment, a reality I witnessed during my 16 years as a Member of Parliament in Leeds.

Hence, I am pleased to announce a significant investment in Northern rail services, the most substantial in a generation, in collaboration with local leaders to devise and implement this plan.

The introduction of Northern Powerhouse Rail will revolutionize transportation, linking major cities like Liverpool, Manchester, Leeds, Bradford, Sheffield, and York with improved, more frequent train services. These services will extend to Newcastle, Hull, and other destinations.

Presently, individuals in Liverpool have access to only two fast trains per hour to Manchester. The journey to Manchester Airport, a mere 28 miles away, can take up to an hour and 25 minutes.

Residents of Leeds face the challenge of lacking mass transit in the largest city in Western Europe, with only a third of the population able to reach the city center within 30 minutes.

These issues are not merely inconveniences but significant obstacles affecting employment, businesses, and families throughout the North. This investment aims to address these challenges by offering quicker commutes, better connections, and more quality time with family rather than waiting at stations. This initiative builds upon our previous efforts.

We have implemented measures such as freezing rail fares for the first time in three decades and maintaining the £3 bus fare cap, stretching the budget of the readers of Mirror. Connecting our prominent Northern cities effectively will unlock their vast potential, including Manchester’s flourishing tech industry, Leeds as a financial hub, Sheffield’s advanced manufacturing sector, Liverpool’s innovations in life sciences, and Newcastle and the North East spearheading clean energy advancements.

Elevating productivity in the North to the national average could inject an additional £40 billion into the economy annually, leading to increased funding for essential services such as education, healthcare, and public amenities.

Prior governments have often spoken about “levelling up” while neglecting essential infrastructure like delayed or canceled trains, deteriorating roads, and the exodus of young talent seeking work elsewhere.

Recognizing the broken promises of the past, we are committed to delivering on our pledges. Unlike our predecessors, we are backing our words with tangible actions. The North played a pivotal role in establishing global railways, and now we are focused on modernizing regional rail networks to drive progress in the North. No
