Anthony Joshua has made a return to the boxing gym almost three weeks after being involved in a fatal car accident in Nigeria. The former two-time heavyweight champion was a passenger in a Lexus SUV that crashed into a stationary truck near Lagos, resulting in the tragic deaths of two close friends and teammates, Sina Ghami and Latif Ayodele. Following the incident, Joshua received medical treatment and was discharged from the hospital on New Year’s Eve.
While speculations arose about Joshua’s future in boxing after the accident, recent social media posts by the British boxer show him back in training. He shared images on Snapchat showcasing his workout routines, describing it as “mental strength therapy.” The photos depict Joshua engaging in various exercises, including hitting pads, lower leg workouts, and stationary biking. Additionally, footage revealed him in a pool session.
Amidst reports that Joshua had decided to retire following the crash, his uncle claimed that he had informed the family about his retirement from boxing. However, Mirror Fighting reports that Joshua has not made a final decision regarding his boxing career. In a recent development, the driver of the car in the accident has been charged by the Ogun State Police Command with various driving offenses.
Promoter Eddie Hearn emphasized that there have been no discussions about Joshua’s fighting future and expressed the need for Joshua to take time away to recover mentally and physically. Hearn highlighted that Joshua will ultimately make his own decision about returning to boxing when he feels ready. Despite the uncertainty, the boxing community continues to support Joshua as he navigates through this challenging period.
