“Dartford Tunnel Closed for Repairs After Lorry Collision”

The Dartford Tunnel is shut down today due to significant damage caused by a lorry collision on Friday, leading to the need for extensive repairs at the site and causing long delays. Last night, drivers faced a 10-mile queue as a lorry exceeding the height limit collided with the tunnel’s roof, resulting in notable harm to its ventilation systems, CCTV, and fire detection system. The closure spans from J1A at Littlebrook Interchange, Dartford, to J31 at Purfleet-on-Thames/West Thurrock in the west tunnel.

Repair crews are working in shifts to fix the damage, but due to the extent of the destruction, the tunnel is expected to remain closed throughout today, as per National Highways’ caution to motorists. While the east tunnel is operational for traffic, drivers should anticipate congestion in the area.

National Highways advised, “Although the right tunnel is open, prepare for traffic congestion near the Dartford Tunnels. Delays are currently occurring. Adjust your travel plans accordingly by allowing extra time for your journey. Consider alternative routes or delaying your trip if affected by this closure.”

Acknowledging the inconvenience caused to those intending to use the northbound Dartford Crossing, authorities assured that all necessary personnel and resources are dedicated to expeditiously resolving the issue and reopening the damaged tunnel when it is deemed safe.
