“12-Year-Old Shark Attack Victim Nico Antic in Coma”

The family of a 12-year-old boy attacked by a shark in Sydney Harbour provided an update on his condition following the tragic incident. Identified as Nico Antic, the child was at Shark Beach with friends when the suspected bull shark attack occurred. This incident marked the first of a series of four shark attacks that occurred after Nico was hospitalized.

Emergency responders quickly arrived at the scene and commended Nico’s friends for their bravery in rescuing him from the water. Nico was promptly taken to Sydney Children’s Hospital in critical condition with severe leg injuries from the attack. Despite efforts by medical staff, Nico remains in a coma with an unresponsive brain.

Family friend Victor Piñeiro initiated a GoFundMe campaign to assist the Antic family during this challenging period. The campaign has garnered support from around 1,700 donors, raising over AUD$122,000 (£61,000) as of the latest update.

Following Nico’s incident, a surge of shark attacks unfolded across New South Wales, prompting beach closures in the region. Experts attribute the increased shark activity to favorable conditions such as warm ocean temperatures and murky waters from recent storms. Authorities advise against swimming near river mouths due to the likelihood of shark presence in such areas.

Surf Life Saving NSW CEO Steve Pearce emphasized the risks associated with current water conditions, suggesting that people opt for safer alternatives like local pools. Donations to the Antic family can be made through the GoFundMe campaign set up for their support.
