“UK Set to Phase Out Copper Landlines for Digital Voice by 2027”

The era of traditional copper landlines hanging above UK streets is coming to an end as the nationwide shift to “Digital Voice” services is scheduled for January 2027. Once implemented, households will transition to making calls through their broadband connections.

This transition signifies a significant change in UK communications, with BT’s Openreach network actively deploying its “Stop Sell” initiative to expedite the move away from outdated infrastructure. As part of this program, providers like BT, Sky, Plusnet, and TalkTalk will no longer be permitted to offer new copper-based broadband and phone services in affected areas.

The Stop Sell notifications have already been rolled out in various regions across the UK in recent years, and Openreach has announced further expansion plans impacting 238 exchange locations and approximately 1.69 million premises. After the changes take effect, customers seeking upgrades or new services will need to switch to full fiber broadband and digital phone services instead of relying on the older copper network.

Openreach clarified that the Stop Sell program is activated when a majority (75%) of premises in a specific exchange can access ultrafast Full Fiber. This move is aimed at transitioning customers and providers to faster and more reliable digital infrastructure, reducing the complexity and costs associated with maintaining both old and new networks.

By early June, the Stop Sell rules will be enforced in 1,432 exchanges nationwide, affecting around 14.2 million properties. James Lilley, Openreach’s Managed Customer Migrations Director, emphasized the importance of this program in driving the UK towards a modern full fiber future by phasing out outdated copper-based services and embracing future-proof technologies.

Additionally, Digital Voice, BT’s advanced home phone service, leverages broadband technology to offer modern features like Multi Call, three-way calling, and call diversion to mobile phones, enhancing call quality. Upgrading to Digital Voice for most households will not change how they use their phones, as the cost is bundled with the broadband service without any extra charges.
