Thousands of households in the UK are set to receive a complimentary £150 credit from their energy providers this month. The distribution of the Warm Home Discount cash by Utilita to smart prepay customers began on January 7, with plans to complete all payments by the end of the month.
The Warm Home Discount, valued at £150, will be credited directly to the electricity accounts of eligible households rather than issued as a cash payment to their banks. To qualify for the discount, individuals must have been receiving specific benefits on the qualifying date, which for this winter was August 24, 2025.
Residents in England and Wales will automatically receive the Warm Home Discount, while in Scotland, automatic payments are limited to those receiving the Guarantee Credit element of Pension Credit. For other eligible benefits, manual application through the energy supplier is required, as the scheme is not available in Northern Ireland.
Following the announcement by the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ), the requirement for high energy usage criteria to qualify for the Warm Home Discount in England and Wales has been eliminated. This change is estimated to increase the number of households receiving the discount by 2.7 million, reaching a total of approximately 6.1 million.
Energy bills have recently increased, with the Ofgem price cap rising to £1,758 for a standard dual fuel household paying by direct debit. The Ofgem price cap applies to customers on a standard variable rate tariff and sets limits on gas and electricity unit charges, as well as standing charges for connection to the energy network.
The price cap serves as an indicative figure for annual energy costs based on typical consumption levels. It’s important to note that while there is a cap on unit charges and standing fees, the total energy bill is influenced by individual gas and electricity usage.
