In recent times, Iran has experienced widespread protests as citizens have taken to the streets to voice their opposition to the authoritarian theocratic government in power.
In response to the protests, the Iranian authorities have cracked down heavily on demonstrators, with human rights organizations indicating that more than 2,400 individuals may have lost their lives during the suppression.
The exact casualty figures have been challenging to ascertain due to the government’s shutdown of the internet, limiting the protesters’ ability to communicate and share information.
Despite the challenges, there is optimism among both domestic and international observers that the current rule under Ayatollah Ali Khamenei could be coming to an end, potentially paving the way for democratic reforms in the nation.
Sharing insights on the situation, comedian and actor Omid Djalili, known for his appearances on BBC’s Live at the Apollo and the Royal Variety Performance, discussed the turmoil in Iran in an interview with The Times. Born in London to Iranian parents, Djalili has long advocated for the rights of Iranians living under oppressive regimes.
Djalili recounted a heart-wrenching story of learning about the death of a friend’s brother at the hands of Iran’s security forces. He revealed that the regime demanded $5,000 (£3,700) from the family to release the body and coerced them to sign a false declaration.
The actor denounced the regime’s actions, citing estimates ranging from 2,000 to 12,000 individuals killed during the protests, with reports of security forces targeting even young teenagers, exemplifying the brutality witnessed.
This is not the first time Djalili has spoken out about the unrest in Iran and the government’s atrocities. In a separate interview, he criticized the regime’s extreme practices, highlighting the inhumane treatment of victims and their families, including demanding payment for the bullets used to kill their loved ones.
