Britons are being cautioned about heavy rainfall reaching up to 70mm and the possibility of flooding in certain areas of the UK. They are advised to prepare an ’emergency kit’ as a precautionary measure.
Following the recent severe weather conditions brought by Storm Goretti, showers are adding to the already saturated ground. Low-pressure systems are moving in, introducing more unsettled weather patterns with rain and potential icy conditions where Arctic air collides with moisture moving southwards.
A yellow weather warning for rain has been issued for parts of southern England on Thursday, indicating a likelihood of further flooding. The warning, effective from 9 am until the end of the day, highlights the risk of surface water flooding due to heavy rain on already saturated ground.
Residents are urged to assess the flood risk to their properties and consider creating a flood plan along with an emergency flood kit. Up to 70mm of rain is expected, although the exact path of the showers remains uncertain. The warning encompasses London, the South East, the South West, parts of Wales, and the West Midlands.
The Met Office predicts a deepening low-pressure area moving northeastwards across England and Wales on Thursday. While the precise path remains unclear, heavy and persistent rain is anticipated throughout the day, potentially leading to surface water flooding in some areas.
Currently, the Environment Agency has issued three flood warnings for England where flooding is expected, along with 40 flood alerts indicating possible flooding scenarios.
Additionally, a separate Met Office yellow warning for ice is in effect for much of western and northern Scotland from 8 pm on Tuesday to 10 am on Wednesday. Icy surfaces are expected due to melting snow and heavy rainfall in those regions.
Looking ahead, the Met Office forecasts further rain from Thursday to Saturday with temperatures around average in the south but colder in the north. There is a possibility of heavy rain and strong winds on Thursday night.
