A recent study reveals that Transylvania and Baku have emerged as unexpected travel destinations desired by Brits this year. The survey of 2,000 individuals also highlighted other less-frequented locations like Rovaniemi in Finland, Panama City, and Nuuk in Greenland, despite recent geopolitical attention towards the latter. Sardinia in Italy claimed the top spot on the list, followed by Madeira in Portugal and Scotland’s Outer Hebrides. The rankings for summer getaways also featured Lapland in Finland and Gozo in Malta.
Transylvania, known for its association with Count Dracula and the Carpathian Mountains, holds the 15th position on the list. Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan, also made it into the top 30 destinations. The survey indicated that 43% of respondents are keen on exploring unconventional holiday spots, indicating a growing interest in unique travel experiences.
This trend is particularly strong among younger generations, with 67% of Gen Z individuals expressing a desire to venture off the beaten path this year. While cost plays a role in their decision-making, with 24% citing budget considerations, the research suggests that Brits prioritize rewarding and memorable experiences over affordability when planning their trips.
More than two-fifths (44%) of respondents opt for lesser-known destinations in pursuit of unique and unforgettable experiences, viewing it as an opportunity for adventure rather than just a vacation. While price remains a factor for half of the participants, 80% emphasize the overall value of a holiday, including the cultural immersion and rewarding feelings it offers.
Adam Bullock, UK director at TopCashback, emphasized the importance of value beyond cost in holiday planning. He highlighted that for many travelers, the essence of value lies in the joy and lasting memories gained from a trip, underscoring the significance of a fulfilling and remarkable travel experience.
