Donald Trump responded with just two words today when questioned about the possibility of forcibly acquiring Greenland. The US President had previously asserted that the US would secure Greenland ‘one way or another’, and had issued warnings of imposing tariffs on countries opposing his intentions regarding the island.
During an interview with NBC News, Trump opted for a “no comment” stance when asked about the potential use of military force in obtaining Greenland. Sir Keir Starmer urged for calm following Trump’s trade war threats over Greenland and downplayed the likelihood of a US invasion.
In the midst of the dispute over the resource-rich region desired by Trump due to its strategic Arctic positioning, the Prime Minister emphasized the necessity for resolving the matter through peaceful discussions among allies rather than resorting to military intervention or trade conflicts.
The Prime Minister expressed skepticism regarding Trump’s seriousness in using military force to annex Greenland and indicated that Britain would refrain from engaging in a trade war over the disagreement, citing it as an inappropriate method for resolving disputes within an alliance.
Trump announced intentions to impose a 10% tariff on all goods sent from Britain to the US starting on February 1, escalating to 25% from June 1, until an agreement is reached for the US to purchase Greenland from Denmark. Similar tariffs were proposed for Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, the Netherlands, and Finland, all of which are NATO members.
When questioned about Trump’s readiness to invade Greenland, Sir Keir expressed doubt and emphasized the importance of resolving the issue through dialogue while condemning the use of tariffs as an unjust approach.
In a critical address from Downing Street, Sir Keir urged unity in facing the crisis and reiterated the necessity of peaceful discussions among allies to address the seriousness of the situation. He stressed that the sovereignty of Greenland should be determined solely by Greenland and Denmark, condemning the use of tariffs against allies as inappropriate and unhelpful in strengthening Greenland’s security.
