“Virgin Media O2 Warns of Rising AI-Generated Scam Calls”

Virgin Media O2 users are being warned to stay vigilant as a concerning new scam is on the rise. The telecommunications company has issued an alert following a significant increase in the number of individuals targeted by fake call center numbers generated by artificial intelligence.

Reports suggest that millions of people may have already fallen victim to dialing these fraudulent numbers, unknowingly connecting with cybercriminals seeking to steal personal information, including sensitive financial details.

Recent findings indicate that approximately 13% of consumers in the UK have encountered false customer service numbers via search engines or AI platforms. Virgin Media highlighted that criminals are leveraging AI technology to present unsuspecting consumers with fake contact information, leading to data theft and fraudulent activities.

With the reliance on AI-generated search results growing, individuals are more likely to trust these outcomes over traditional web links, providing hackers with a prime opportunity to deceive unsuspecting users.

Virgin Media emphasizes the importance of solely using authentic service numbers listed on official company websites, applications, or billing statements to avoid falling prey to such scams. For those seeking assistance from O2, the recommended contact method is dialing 202 from an O2 device, while Virgin Media customers should call 150 from a landline.

Furthermore, individuals are advised to exercise caution when presented with numbers from search engines, social media posts, or AI tools. The company also warns against sharing security codes or personal information with unsolicited callers, regardless of their claimed identity.

Murray Mackenzie, Director of Fraud Prevention at Virgin Media O2, underscored the risks associated with AI tools enabling fraudsters to create realistic-looking fake numbers, urging the public to report suspicious activities to combat scams effectively. Virgin Media O2 is actively blocking known scammer numbers and leveraging AI technology to identify and flag over 1 billion dubious calls to date, aiming to protect customers from falling victim to fraudulent schemes.

To enhance safety measures and prevent further scams, individuals are encouraged to report questionable numbers to 7726 to expedite the shutdown of fraudulent operations.
