Tragic Fatalities in Fishing Boat Rescue Operation

A tragic incident unfolded as a man lost his life following an accident where two crew members of a fishing boat fell overboard, prompting an extensive emergency rescue operation. The distress call was made from the UK-registered vessel Fortitude, located 14 miles off the coast of Newbiggin in Northumberland on Sunday. Various emergency services, including the RNLI, Coastguard, North East Ambulance Service, Great North Air Ambulance Service, and Northumbria Police, responded to the situation.

Despite efforts to save the individuals, one person was taken to Northumbria Specialist Emergency Care Hospital for treatment, while unfortunately, another man passed away, with his family notified of the tragic event. Authorities confirmed that there were no suspicions surrounding the man’s death, and investigations are being supported by the Marine Accident Investigation Branch.

The rescue operation faced challenging conditions with waves reaching up to 4 meters high. Tynemouth RNLI representatives mentioned that their lifeboat crews navigated through rough waters to reach the distressed vessel and provide assistance. The Coastguard reported that a coordinated response involving multiple agencies was swiftly initiated, including deploying search and rescue assets to the scene.

The North East Ambulance Service dispatched teams to support the RNLI crews at Blyth Harbour, transporting one patient to the hospital. The incident serves as a reminder of the dangers at sea, emphasizing the importance of prompt emergency response by contacting the coastguard in similar situations.
