Glenn Deir, a retired journalist residing in St. John’s, shared his experience of being reliant on six packs of Boost, a nutritional drink, for sustenance after undergoing throat surgery to remove cancerous tissues. Despite longing for solid food, he had to rely on Boost and pureed meals due to swallowing difficulties caused by the surgery.
During swallow tests, Deir struggled to safely consume food and liquid without it entering his airway instead of his stomach, highlighting the challenges he faced in regaining his ability to eat normally. Despite setbacks, his healthcare team at St. Clare’s Hospital remained dedicated to his recovery, planning for radiation treatment and chemotherapy to follow.
Deir’s radiation treatment, accompanied by daily exercises to strengthen his tongue and jaw muscles, posed its own set of challenges. However, his determination and the support of his healthcare providers kept him optimistic during the arduous process. Eventually, his efforts paid off, leading to improvements in his swallowing ability and qualifying him for intensive swallow therapy.
After months of liquid diets and pureed foods, Deir celebrated a breakthrough when he successfully consumed solid food for the first time in five months. With his culinary options expanding to include soft foods like mac and cheese and apple pie, he navigated his meals with newfound encouragement despite the lingering effects of radiation on his saliva production.
As he continues his journey towards recovery, Deir remains grateful for the progress made and the support received, acknowledging the challenges faced but also the victories along the way. His story serves as an inspiration for perseverance and resilience in the face of adversity.
