Simone Abrahamsohn from Toronto shares her personal journey of becoming the primary caregiver for her brother, Stuart, after their mother’s passing this summer. Stuart, a neurodivergent individual with autism and a survivor of a left-brain stem stroke, requires specialized care including assistance with daily activities and emotional support due to mood fluctuations. Growing up, Simone struggled with societal perceptions of neurodivergence, feeling embarrassed by her brother’s behavior and societal misunderstandings. Despite her own challenges with ADHD, Simone has taken on the role of caregiver, adapting to create a harmonious living environment for both herself and Stuart. Through understanding and acceptance, Simone aims to provide agency and support to her brother, fostering a new chapter in their sibling relationship. Despite sacrifices in personal pursuits, Simone is committed to nurturing their bond and creating a supportive home for both siblings.
