Government’s Asylum Policy Risks Deterring Legitimate Claims

The government’s aim to deter asylum seekers from risky journeys to the UK is commendable, but the recent asylum and returns policy may not effectively achieve this goal.

While there are positive aspects in the proposals, such as community sponsorship to aid refugees and the prompt removal of individuals without lawful presence in the UK, concerns arise regarding the impact on legitimate asylum claimants, especially those escaping conflict and persecution, and refugee children who enter through irregular means due to family ties or birth to refugee parents.

The proposal to reassess an individual’s asylum status every 30 months for up to two decades could create societal divisions, leading to uncertainty for certain groups and hindering their ability to fully integrate into society.

There is a risk that the proposed immigration policies may foster hostility towards perceived “temporary visitors,” potentially affecting children who face the prospect of being displaced to an unfamiliar location if deemed safe by the government.

The government’s argument that these measures will diminish “pull factors” assumes that asylum seekers are well-informed about destination countries’ policies, which may not be the case. Factors like family connections, language proficiency, and existing communities play a more significant role in determining migration decisions.

To combat human trafficking facilitated by smugglers, collaboration with neighboring countries is essential. Emulating successful strategies like those implemented during the final months of the Biden administration, which saw a significant decrease in irregular border crossings, could guide the UK in enhancing partnerships with EU nations.

Enhanced cooperation, such as expanding existing pilot programs with France and implementing innovative approaches like using asylum centers in France for initial assessments, could be beneficial. However, any initiatives should prioritize compassion and fairness rather than harsh measures.
