“First-time homebuyers to benefit from Lifetime ISA penalty elimination”

First-time homebuyers are set to benefit from a significant savings enhancement with reports indicating the elimination of the penalty charge for Lifetime ISA withdrawals.

An updated version of the Lifetime ISA is expected to be introduced in April 2028, offering individuals the flexibility to utilize the savings account for purchasing their first home or retirement planning.

The Lifetime ISA functions as a savings tool where individuals can deposit up to £4,000 per tax year, receiving a 25% bonus from the Government, equating to a potential £1,000 bonus annually.

Previously, a penalty charge was applicable for any withdrawals from the Lifetime ISA not related to buying a first home or retirement, resulting in the forfeiture of both the bonus and a portion of the initial savings.

The new iteration of the Lifetime ISA is rumored to eliminate this withdrawal penalty, with the current property value limit for a Lifetime ISA-funded home purchase capped at £450,000.

Since its inception in 2017, the Lifetime ISA has maintained this property value restriction, prompting calls from advocates to raise the limit to align with escalating housing prices.

The potential adjustment of this limit in the upcoming model remains uncertain. Also, reports suggest that the retirement aspect of the Lifetime ISA will be phased out by 2028.
