The Kennedy Center’s future was at the center of a heated debate on Thursday as associates of U.S. President Donald Trump within the board initiated actions to honor him through physical modifications to the renowned performing arts venue, potentially defying a federal court ruling.
In a lengthy virtual meeting, the board passed a resolution to include Trump’s name on the building’s facade, transforming it into “The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts Restored and Renovated By President Donald J. Trump.” Additionally, plans were made to designate the plaza in front of the center in Trump’s honor and close off a significant portion of the venue for a two-year period to accommodate extensive renovations.
These proposed changes, as outlined by Representative Joyce Beatty, a Democratic board member from Ohio, and her legal team, present a significant challenge to the authority of U.S. District Judge Christopher Cooper. Cooper had previously ruled in May that the installation of letters spelling out Trump’s name on the building was unauthorized and ordered their removal, a decision upheld despite challenges from the Trump administration. Moreover, Cooper blocked a planned two-year shutdown of the center, criticizing the board’s decision as lacking adequate information and appearing predetermined.
Expressing disapproval of the recent developments, Beatty asserted that the actions aimed to circumvent the court’s decision and contravene congressional regulations. She vowed to continue advocating for the preservation of the national monument. A response from the Kennedy Center regarding these developments was not immediately available.
Much of the meeting revolved around deliberations on the necessary closures to facilitate the mandated renovations essential for enhancing safety within the venue. In response to the Judge’s reservations on the earlier closure decision, the management of the Kennedy Center pledged to present three alternative closure plans for the board’s consideration.
The options included a complete shutdown, a partial closure allowing some public access and limited programming in unaffected spaces, and a phased closure strategy focusing solely on critical infrastructure needs while maintaining a full program schedule. Ultimately, the board opted for a two-year closure period while permitting potential programming in the outdoor Reach space.
The decision to proceed with the extended closure, alongside efforts to memorialize Trump within the center, raises concerns regarding whether the board thoroughly evaluated all available options.
Transitioning into his second term, Trump has orchestrated significant changes at the Kennedy Center, symbolizing his influence and authority. Following his return to office in January 2025, Trump swiftly replaced the center’s leadership with handpicked trustees, positioning himself as the chairman. Although his name was briefly displayed on the building, it was subsequently removed in compliance with the court order. Trump’s initiatives at the Kennedy Center are part of a broader endeavor to transform Washington, encompassing projects like the White House’s East Wing demolition and the construction of a contested ballroom, currently under legal scrutiny.
The Kennedy Center’s leadership underscores the urgent need for repairs and upgrades within the institution. Executives have emphasized the deteriorating condition of the building, citing severe water damage and aged equipment requiring immediate attention. The executive director proposed a comprehensive renovation plan to Trump, advocating for a complete closure over two years to address all necessary repairs efficiently.
