“Conservative Frontbencher Criticized for Abramovich Legal Role”

A Conservative frontbencher faces criticism for his involvement as a legal representative for Russian oligarch Roman Abramovich, according to reports. The Ukraine Solidarity Campaign has expressed concern over Shadow Attorney General Lord David Wolfson’s connection to the case. The UK government is actively seeking over £2.5 billion from Abramovich, earmarked to benefit Ukraine.

Abramovich is currently entangled in a legal dispute with the Jersey government regarding assets totaling more than £5.3 billion linked to him. Recently, Keir Starmer issued a warning to Abramovich, demanding the transfer of proceeds from the Chelsea sale or face legal consequences.

Lord Wolfson has been engaged in the Jersey proceedings on behalf of Abramovich. The Ukraine Solidarity Campaign raised questions about his involvement, hinting at potential political implications and alliances with Russia and Nigel Farage’s Reform UK party.

The campaign group urged the government to introduce urgent legislation preventing sanctioned individuals from using legal tactics to delay accountability. The frozen proceeds from Abramovich’s sale of Chelsea remain a point of contention between his legal team and the government, as he seeks to allocate the funds to victims of the Ukraine conflict, which may include Russians.

In a letter to Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch, Labour Justice Minister Jake Richards highlighted concerns about Lord Wolfson’s dual roles and potential conflicts of interest. Richards emphasized the importance of politicians avoiding such conflicts and respecting ethical principles, despite the cab rank rule that barristers adhere to.

Responding to Labour’s accusations, the Tories clarified that Lord Wolfson’s involvement pertains to the Jersey legal proceedings, not the Chelsea FC matter. They denounced Labour’s criticisms as politically motivated, asserting their commitment to supporting Ukraine and dismissing the allegations of alignment with Russia as baseless.
