“Rugby Star Gavin Henson’s Country Pub: A Culinary Haven”

On a chilly winter day, there’s nothing quite like the inviting ambiance of a cozy country pub. The allure of this charming pub in a quaint Vale of Glamorgan village beckoned me for three compelling reasons. Firstly, its stellar reputation for delectable food. Secondly, my frequent cycling past it always tempted me to abandon the bike and pop in for a pint.

However, the most significant draw was that this pub is owned by a renowned sports figure. Two decades ago, I witnessed Gavin Henson’s legendary kick that secured a historic win for Wales in a rugby match against England. Despite not being the designated kicker that day, Henson’s remarkable 44-meter kick from a challenging angle led Wales to victory, marking a pivotal moment in Welsh rugby history.

Henson, known for his distinctive appearance and athletic prowess, rose to fame alongside singer Charlotte Church as a prominent celebrity couple dubbed the “Welsh Posh and Becks.” Beyond his celebrity status, Henson’s talent and dedication as an athlete garnered admiration. While he enjoyed the limelight in the past, recent insights reveal his preference for a quieter life in St Brides Major, near his hometown, shying away from media attention.

In 2019, Henson and his wife took over The Fox, undertaking a significant renovation before reopening in early 2020. Despite the challenges posed by the pandemic and Brexit, the pub garnered praise for its food and warm hospitality. Recently, the pub made headlines again as it searched for a new head chef amidst the hospitality industry’s crisis.

Stepping into the pub today evokes a sense of timeless comfort. The cozy yet stylish interior, featuring flagstone flooring, elegant Christmas decorations, and rustic wooden furnishings, exudes a welcoming atmosphere. Savoring Butty Bach ale and Jeremy Clarkson’s Hawkstone lager, we perused the menu to indulge in a delightful culinary experience.

Opting for crispy ham hock and cod and salmon fishcake as starters, we relished the golden-brown delicacies with flavorful fillings. For mains, the roast sirloin of Welsh beef and shoulder of Welsh lamb impressed with their generous portions and exquisite flavors. Accompanied by an array of delectable sides, the dishes exemplified culinary excellence.

The bill, inclusive of starters, mains, beverages, and kids’ meals, amounted to a reasonable total, reflecting the pub’s value for money. Immersed in the inviting ambiance, it was evident that fellow diners also appreciated the experience, expressing intentions to revisit. Personally, I found the pub’s charm captivating, echoing the sentiment of many patrons who relish its warm hospitality and culinary delights.
