BBC TV Licence Fee to Increase to £180 on April 1

It has been officially announced that the fee for the BBC TV licence is scheduled to increase in a few days. The Department for Media, Culture and Sport has disclosed that starting from April 1, the annual fee for the TV licence will be £180.

Presently, a TV licence costs £174.50 per year, which is mandatory for watching or recording live TV shows on any channel, whether viewed on a television, computer, laptop, tablet, or smartphone.

A TV licence is also required for viewing any content on BBC iPlayer, whether live or on catch-up. Nevertheless, a TV licence is not needed for catch-up viewing on alternative streaming platforms like Netflix, Amazon Prime, ITVX, Disney Plus, YouTube, All 4, or My5.

If you watch live programming on these services, a TV licence is necessary. Failure to have a valid licence while watching live TV may lead to a potential fine of £1,000. The TV licence fee contributed to 68% of BBC funding in 2023/24, with total BBC income for that period amounting to £5.39 billion.

Individuals receiving Pension Credit and aged 75 and above are eligible for a free TV licence. Similarly, students living away from home may be covered if their parents hold a TV licence, provided they are watching TV on devices like phones, tablets, or laptops.

However, coverage does not extend to viewing on televisions or desktop computers connected to the mains. Those residing in residential care or sheltered accommodation can apply for a discounted TV licence at £7.50 per room, flat, or bungalow, subject to eligibility criteria for both the individual and the accommodation.

The TV licence fee typically undergoes an annual increase in April, aligned with the previous September Consumer Price Index (CPI) inflation rate. Following the confirmation of a 3.8% inflation rate in September, the TV licence fee will rise to £180 on April 1.

After the increase, the cost of an annual color TV licence will be £5.50 more per year, equivalent to an additional 46p per month.
