A peculiar phenomenon in nature is the narwhal tusk, which can reach lengths of up to three meters. This singular tusk, an upper tooth that emerges through the whale’s lip on the left side, is distinctive for its perfectly straight growth without any curves.
According to a group of international researchers, the secret behind the straight growth of the narwhal tusk lies in its unique pattern of opposing spirals. Henrik Birkedal from Aarhus University in Denmark, a study author, expressed surprise at the discovery of two opposing spirals in the tusk, one spiraling to the right and the other to the left.
Recently published research in the journal Nature Communications delves into how these opposing spirals enable the straight growth of the narwhal tusk. The investigation commenced when Birkedal was approached by a colleague in organic chemistry who was examining the handedness of molecules. Intrigued by the consistent leftward spirals in narwhal tusks, Birkedal initiated a collaborative effort involving biologists from Greenland and physicists from Sweden to unravel the tusk’s molecular structure and spirals.
Utilizing advanced imaging methods akin to CT scans, the researchers revealed a complex structure within the tusks. These tusks, predominantly found in male narwhals, consist of dentine and cementum, lacking the enamel layer present in human teeth. The imaging revealed two opposing spirals, a left-handed spiral on the outer cementum layer and a right-handed one in the inner dentine layer.
This discovery not only solves the mystery of the narwhal’s straight tusk but also offers insights into the structural principles of human bones and similar cases, noted Birkedal.
Regarding the tusk’s function, Martin Nweeia, a narwhal biologist and marine mammal teeth specialist from Harvard University, emphasized that his research has identified the tusk primarily as a sensory organ, contrary to defense or feeding purposes. While acknowledging the speculative nature of the tusk’s function in the study, Nweeia highlighted the multifunctionality of teeth, citing the potential defensive role under certain circumstances.
Looking ahead, Nweeia expressed hope for future research collaborations with Indigenous communities and emphasized the significance of incorporating traditional knowledge alongside scientific inquiry. He underscored the value of integrating diverse perspectives and fields of study to gain a comprehensive understanding of natural phenomena, a sentiment echoed by Birkedal, who emphasized the importance of interdisciplinary teamwork in advancing scientific knowledge.
