“Revolutionary Liver Transplant: Quebec Man Receives Regenerated Organ”

A 64-year-old man from Quebec has made history by being the first patient in North America to undergo a liver transplant using a regenerated liver. Gérard Landry, a resident of Nouvelle in Quebec, had been battling liver issues for about 15 years, which had progressed to cirrhosis and liver cancer. Before his surgery at Montreal’s Centre hospitalier de l’Université de Montréal (CHUM), Landry received surprising news that his donor liver had been regenerated by a revolutionary machine.

The innovative technology, known as Liver Assist, allows medical professionals to treat and evaluate a donated liver outside the body before transplantation. This breakthrough enabled Landry to receive a liver that may have been deemed too risky for conventional use. Dr. David Hénault, a liver transplant specialist at CHUM, led the project and performed Landry’s surgery, highlighting that the team had been preparing for this technology for several years.

Liver Assist functions by connecting a donated liver to a machine that circulates oxygen-rich fluid through the organ, potentially reversing damage caused by oxygen deprivation. Subsequently, doctors can switch to a blood-based solution to assess the liver’s functionality under conditions simulating the human body. Dr. Hénault emphasized that the technology not only enhances the viability of donated livers but also reduces complications and hospital stays for suitable recipients.

CHUM, which conducts around 70 liver transplants annually, collaborated with Transplant Québec to evaluate previously declined livers for potential recovery using Liver Assist. The team anticipates that this technology could increase the availability of transplantable livers by 20 to 24 within its initial year of implementation, with prospects for further growth as adoption expands.

Post-surgery, Landry showed promising signs of a successful transplant, with his blood work surpassing expectations the day after the procedure. Dr. Hénault attributed Landry’s positive outcome to the assistance provided by the machine during the transplant process. Landry, currently recuperating in Montreal and undergoing regular blood tests, looks forward to returning home to Gaspésie to continue his recovery and reunite with his family and horses.

In addition to his personal journey, Landry hopes his experience will raise awareness about organ donation, underscoring the importance of having an adequate supply of donated organs for advanced technologies to make a difference. He emphasizes that without available organs, even the most advanced medical innovations cannot fulfill their potential.
