Andy Robertson has revealed his deep emotions following Scotland’s qualification for the World Cup. Despite the importance of the moment, Robertson couldn’t shake thoughts of his former Liverpool teammate, Diogo Jota.
Expressing his feelings, Robertson shared, “I’ve been struggling internally. This World Cup opportunity may be my last, and I couldn’t stop thinking about Diogo Jota. We often discussed the World Cup; he missed out due to injury, and I missed out because Scotland didn’t qualify.”
Robertson acknowledged his emotional turmoil, stating, “I tried to conceal my feelings from the team, but I know he would be proud. I couldn’t get him out of my mind all day.”
The impact of Jota’s tragic passing continues to affect not only Robertson but also other Liverpool players. The team has experienced a noticeable shift in focus and motivation this season, with Mo Salah notably affected.
Memories of Jota’s untimely death in a car accident have lingered at Anfield, where the club pays tribute to his memory. His presence is symbolically preserved in the dressing room, training ground, and match programs, signifying his lasting impact on the team.
Despite the ongoing grief, Robertson’s openness about his struggles is commendable. His close bond with Jota was evident, with Robertson even attending Jota’s funeral in Gondomar, near Porto.
As life progresses at different paces for everyone, coping with loss varies. The absence of Jota appears to be a significant factor influencing Liverpool’s performance, with players grappling with the realization that he will never be there to support them again.
