“Snooker Stars Call for Overhaul of Controversial ‘Miss’ Rule”

Prominent figures in the world of snooker, such as Ronnie O’Sullivan, Shaun Murphy, Kyren Wilson, and Mark Selby, have expressed their views on a rule they wish to see altered in the sport. During an interview with TNT Sports, top snooker professionals were asked about potential changes to the rules, with a particular regulation being consistently highlighted.

Seven-time world champion O’Sullivan, among others, has advocated for a review of the contentious ‘miss’ rule, which has been a contentious issue for top players. Under the current rule, a foul and a miss may be called by the referee if a player fails to make contact with the designated ball, signifying an inadequate attempt to do so.

Upon the announcement of a ‘foul and a miss’, the opponent of the offending player can choose to reset the balls for a reattempt or leave them in their current positions on the table. This rule has been a topic of debate within the sport, with critics arguing about its inconsistent enforcement, impact on game pace, and potential confusion for casual viewers.

When questioned about potential changes to the game, O’Sullivan promptly highlighted his desire to amend the miss rule, with Wilson echoing the sentiment by suggesting a limit of three misses. Selby also expressed his view, proposing a restriction where players can only miss three times before facing consequences, emphasizing how multiple misses could impact game outcomes unfairly.

Former world champion Murphy offered a different perspective, criticizing the potential exploitation of the miss rule. “The sole rule change I would advocate for is the foul and a miss rule,” he remarked. “It
