“Woman’s ‘Adam’s Apple’ Joke Turns into Shocking Cancer Discovery”

A woman who made a light-hearted comment about having an ‘Adam’s apple’ in her neck was shocked to discover it was actually a 6cm cancerous tumor. Bethany Dodwell initially noticed the lump in her throat in 2022 but didn’t pay much attention to it. The Adam’s apple, more common in men, is a bulge in the neck formed by the thyroid cartilage around the larynx.

It wasn’t until three years later, during a pub visit in July 2025, that Bethany’s mother pointed out the size of the lump, prompting her to schedule a GP appointment. The 25-year-old received confirmation of the lump and underwent ultrasound and biopsy tests. Bethany, a dancer, had been experiencing fatigue and breathing difficulties, attributing them to her busy schedule and asthma.

After a biopsy in September 2025, Bethany was diagnosed with grade five thyroid cancer. She underwent surgery in December to remove her thyroid and several lymph nodes, with plans for radioactive iodine treatment in February. Reflecting on her experience, Bethany from Rotherham, South Yorkshire, expressed surprise at the lump’s appearance resembling an Adam’s apple earlier.

Following her mother’s observation at a pub, Bethany sought medical attention, leading to further tests and the cancer diagnosis. The surgery revealed the tumor’s substantial size and unexpected lymph node involvement, extending the procedure. Now in recovery, Bethany awaits radioactive iodine treatment to address any remaining cancer cells.

Bethany noted experiencing fatigue, breathing difficulties, and swallowing issues before noticing the lump. She advised others to promptly address any health concerns with a doctor. Thyroid cancer affects the thyroid gland in the neck, responsible for hormone production. Symptoms include neck lumps, voice changes, and swallowing difficulties.

Bethany emphasized her mother’s role in detecting the lump and emphasized the importance of seeking medical advice promptly. She encouraged vigilance in monitoring one’s health and acting on any unusual symptoms.
