“Warning: Children Vulnerable to Russian Disinformation”

Children may be at higher risk of falling for Russian disinformation due to a decrease in reading habits, according to a warning from Bridget Phillipson. The Education Secretary expressed concerns that the decline in reading skills among young individuals could potentially impact national security, especially as malicious actors are becoming more sophisticated in spreading misinformation through social media.

Phillipson emphasized the necessity for cultivating a generation of critical thinkers to combat the proliferation of false information online, with state actors posing as credible news sources. The threat of disinformation, particularly on social media platforms, has evolved into a more complex challenge, with deceptive content designed to mimic authentic news outlets.

In an article for the Telegraph, Phillipson highlighted the urgency of addressing the literacy crisis and enhancing reading comprehension skills to safeguard national security. To counter the growing threats from foreign state actors like Russia, she stressed the importance of fostering a generation of readers who can discern truth from falsehood and resist the allure of online misinformation.

To tackle the issue, the Department for Education, under Phillipson’s leadership, has partnered with the National Literacy Trust to launch a nationwide campaign aimed at making 2026 the designated year of reading. The initiative seeks to reverse the declining trend in reading enjoyment among children, which has dropped from half of kids enjoying reading two decades ago to just a third today.

Despite Phillipson’s efforts to introduce a new Year 8 reading assessment, opposition from teaching unions, including the National Education Union, has emerged. Critics argue that additional mandatory tests may not be the most effective solution to address the challenges posed by disinformation.

The UK is currently facing a surge of disinformation campaigns and propaganda aimed at undermining societal stability and trust in governmental institutions. MI6’s new chief, Blaise Metreweli, has emphasized the omnipresence of the threat, asserting that the front line against such tactics is everywhere. Promising to confront emerging threats head-on, Metreweli pledged to enhance her intelligence teams’ technological proficiency to combat modern challenges effectively.

In light of these developments, mastering technology has become paramount for intelligence operatives, with a particular emphasis on programming languages like “Python.” Metreweli stressed the importance of integrating technological expertise into all facets of intelligence operations, from fieldwork to tradecraft, to ensure readiness in confronting contemporary threats.
