Russia has issued a direct threat of using nuclear weapons against the UK and mainland Europe. Sergey Karaganov, who leads Russia’s Council for Foreign and Defense Policy, stated that if Russia faces defeat in Ukraine, Vladimir Putin would resort to nuclear weapons, resulting in severe consequences for Europe.
Karaganov criticized his own government for its perceived leniency towards Europe, mentioning that if European support for the ongoing war persists, Russia will have to take harsh measures. He dismissed the idea of a Russian defeat as a far-fetched notion and criticized the intellectual capacity of European leaders.
According to Karaganov, Europe has lost its global standing due to its inability to comprehend current events, pointing to a decline in intellectual prowess since 1968. He emphasized the importance of Russia guiding European leaders back to reality without resorting to nuclear warfare.
The escalating global tensions prompted the UK to deploy a military officer to Greenland at Denmark’s request, as Denmark reinforced its military presence in the Arctic and High North. The joint operation involving multiple allied countries aims to enhance security and deter potential aggression from Russia and China in the region.
Germany, Sweden, Norway, and France have committed personnel to the joint mission to strengthen regional security cooperation. Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump’s persistent calls for the US to control Greenland have raised concerns about the future of the transatlantic alliance. His administration’s threats of force to annex Greenland, an autonomous territory of Denmark, have sparked apprehension within the alliance.
