In various parts of the world, Valentine’s Day is widely celebrated, but Wales has its own special day dedicated to love known as Dydd Santes Dwynwen, or St Dwynwen’s Day, observed annually on January 25 to honor the patron saint of lovers in Wales.
The story behind this celebration is a tragic one, as recounted by TikToker Abbie, who shares content on TikTok under the username dream0graphy. The tale revolves around St Dwynwen, believed to be the daughter of fifth-century King Brychan, who ruled a part of Mid Wales. Dwynwen, described as the most beautiful among her 24 sisters, fell in love with a local prince against her father’s wishes. To escape her disapproving father, she sought solace in the Welsh woods, where she prayed for help.
According to Abbie, Dwynwen was visited by an angel who offered her a potion to erase memories of her beloved prince, inadvertently turning him into ice. Dwynwen then received three wishes: to free her prince, protect true lovers, and never marry. In gratitude, she devoted her life to God, establishing a convent off the coast of Anglesey and becoming a nun. Dwynwen’s healing abilities and selfless service to others made her a revered figure until her passing in 465AD. The well near her convent became a pilgrimage site for Welsh lovers, with sacred fish and eels believed to predict relationship outcomes.
Although not as widely recognized as Valentine’s Day, Dydd Santes Dwynwen holds significance for many in Wales, who exchange gifts, cards, and lovespoons as tokens of affection. Visitors can explore St Dwynwen’s Church remains at Ynys Llanddwyn on Anglesey, a picturesque location associated with the saint’s life. The area boasts scenic landscapes, wildlife, and historical sites, making it an attractive destination throughout the year. Ynys Llanddwyn features lighthouses, cottages, and the ruins of Eglwys Santes Dwynwen, where the saint is believed to be buried. The island’s wells, including Ffynnon Dwynwen, are tied to romantic folklore, adding to its allure as a romantic spot.
As Visit Wales notes, Ynys Llanddwyn’s enchanting setting, complete with magical eels and historical landmarks, embodies St Dwynwen’s message: “Nothing wins hearts like cheerfulness.”
