The family of a Scottish man who passed away in Colombia is devastated after learning that his body might have been laid to rest in South America without their knowledge. Ross Macquarrie, 38, from Mauchline in East Ayrshire, was discovered deceased in his Bogotá accommodation by cleaning staff on November 11 last year. His relatives have been striving to repatriate his remains to Scotland ever since.
Adding to their anguish, Ross’ grieving loved ones were informed that his body could have been already buried in Colombia due to limited space in Bogotá’s morgues, with no knowledge of any autopsy being conducted.
Lindsay Melvin, Ross’ former partner and mother of their three-year-old daughter Blake, expressed deep distress at the situation, stating that the lack of closure and uncertainty surrounding Ross’ burial process have taken a toll on their emotional well-being.
Ross had embarked on a solo trip to South America on November 5, with Lindsay recalling his mention of feeling unwell during a video call with their daughter upon his arrival. Concern grew when Ross did not respond to messages for several days. Sadly, the tragic news emerged while his partner Aga was en route to Colombia. Colombian authorities were reportedly investigating the circumstances of Ross’ death.
Lindsay emphasized the family’s agony over the absence of a post-mortem examination and their inability to properly mourn Ross, highlighting the traumatic nature of the situation. Described as a devoted father and a jovial individual, Ross’ loved ones are seeking answers from Colombia and the FCDO to facilitate his repatriation for a dignified farewell.
Local MSP Elena Whitam and Scottish Labour MP Elaine Stewart expressed their sympathies and commitment to assisting Ross’ family during this challenging time. An FCDO Spokesperson affirmed that they are providing support to the British man’s family and maintaining communication with local authorities.
