UK Phone Users Urged to Prepare for Copper Landline Phase-Out

A significant change is on the horizon for millions of phone users in the UK, urging homeowners to take action promptly. The traditional copper landlines that have facilitated communication for years are being phased out in favor of new technology known as Digital Voice, utilizing broadband for calls.

This transition not only aligns with modern demands but also enhances reliability, introducing features like improved call clarity, call forwarding to mobile phones, and enhanced call screening to combat scams and unwanted marketing messages.

Scheduled to come into effect in January 2027, the approaching deadline has prompted BT to launch an awareness campaign, championed by Clare Balding under the banner ‘Don’t Put Off the Switch,’ urging households to assess their landlines for readiness in the digital era.

This initiative coincides with recent research revealing a tendency among Britons to procrastinate essential actions, assuming that functional systems require no immediate attention.

Clare Balding emphasized the importance of responding promptly to provider communications to maintain seamless landline services, assuring that BT will offer support throughout the transition. Customers are likely to retain their numbers without cost increases, necessitating a simple switch from traditional wall sockets to broadband hubs for most households, eliminating the need for technician visits.

In cases where issues arise, contacting the provider for assistance is advised, as overlooking provider messages could disrupt critical connections, according to Lucy Baker, Consumer Digital Voice Director at BT. The shift to digital landlines marks a substantial upgrade to the UK’s communication infrastructure, promoting reliable and secure technology for enhanced connectivity.

Customers with special needs, such as telecare device users, are encouraged to notify their providers promptly for tailored support implementation. BT’s Digital Voice service offers advanced features like Multi Call and call diversion, promising improved call quality and compatibility with modern Digital Home phones.

Transitioning to Digital Voice is anticipated to have minimal impact on typical phone usage, with service costs bundled into existing broadband packages at no additional charge.
