“Popular retailer Claire’s faces administration, 1,000 jobs at risk”

Over 1,000 jobs are in jeopardy following the collapse of popular accessories retailer Claire’s into administration.

Administrators from Kroll have been tasked with handling the insolvency of Claire’s, putting around 150 stores at risk. This comes merely four months after a previous rescue attempt. Despite the situation, Claire’s will continue operating for the time being.

Recent reports indicated that Claire’s and The Original Factory Shop (TOFS) were preparing to enter administration. Modella Capital, the owner of Claire’s, has confirmed the initiation of administration proceedings for both entities.

Retail Economics’ Nicholas Found has expressed concerns that Claire’s struggled to keep up with the rapid evolution of online platforms like Temu and TikTok Shop, which offer competitive pricing and effective social media marketing strategies, impacting traditional high street retailers, especially in the accessories market.

Sean Moran, a restructuring expert at Shakespeare Martineau, highlighted the increasing competition faced by fashion and accessories brands from online retailers, leading to significant challenges for high street businesses.

Helen Dickinson, CEO of the British Retail Consortium (BRC), pointed out the tough market conditions affecting retailers, exacerbated by the rising cost of living. She emphasized the need for retailers to adapt to survive in the changing economic landscape.

Modella has cited challenging retail conditions, influenced by government policies, as a major factor contributing to the struggles faced by British businesses like Claire’s.

RSM UK, an audit and consulting firm, predicted continued challenges for the retail sector in 2026, citing fragile consumer confidence, competition from influencers, and the growing impact of social media on consumer behavior.

Jacqui Baker, head of retail at RSM UK, highlighted the increasing influence of social media on retail, particularly among younger consumers who rely on platforms like TikTok and Instagram for product discovery.

Despite these challenges, Nicholas Found emphasized that traditional high street brands like Claire’s still hold value but need to undergo strategic changes to remain relevant in today’s market.
