“Tragic Shark Attack Claims 12-Year-Old Boy’s Life”

A 12-year-old boy tragically lost his life in a shark attack while enjoying a day out with friends by the water. Nico Antic was playing near a rock ledge on January 18 when a shark bit him, causing severe injuries to his leg. Despite being swiftly taken to Sydney Children’s Hospital and receiving intensive care, Nico passed away, leaving his family devastated.

The incident, suspected to involve a bull shark, was part of a troubling trend of four reported shark attacks in New South Wales within just two days. Nico’s family described him as a cheerful, sociable, and active child with a generous soul, fondly remembering his vibrant personality.

Grateful for the efforts of first responders and the medical staff at Sydney Children’s Hospital, the family also thanked the community for their outpouring of support during this challenging time. They requested privacy as they mourn their loss.

An online fundraiser has raised a substantial amount to aid Nico’s family, accumulating $240,000 (£121,000) in donations. This shark attack was the first of a series of shark-related incidents in the following days. Nico’s friends were commended for their bravery in rescuing him from the water after the attack.

Steve Pearce, the chief executive of Surf Life Saving NSW, highlighted the increased shark activity around Sydney, attributing it to environmental factors like runoff into the ocean. He advised caution, recommending against swimming near river mouths due to the congregation of sharks in such areas. Pearce emphasized the importance of water safety and suggested opting for pool activities until the situation improves.
