“Ottawa Announces Historic $10B Clean Energy Investment”

Ottawa has declared it as the most significant investment in clean energy in North American history. Prime Minister Mark Carney, alongside N.L. Premier Tony Wakeham and Quebec Premier Christine Fréchette, made the announcement in St. John’s. Wakeham expressed that this marks a positive shift from the past with a new deal benefiting all parties involved.

The new agreement includes a $10 billion investment by Ottawa to enhance the Churchill Falls generating station, develop the Gull Island hydroelectric project, establish transmission lines, and introduce a 2,000 MW onshore wind energy project in Labrador. These initiatives, valued at nearly $70 billion, are set to significantly increase the capacity of Churchill Falls and create 23,000 jobs.

The deal aims to provide Quebec with secure power and assist N.L. in generating additional revenue while addressing its debt issues. Moreover, Newfoundlanders and Labradorians are expected to save money on electricity bills with a new 15% rebate.

Wakeham described the agreement as a “win-win-win,” highlighting the improved financial outcomes compared to the 2024 MOU. The agreement is effective until March 31, 2027, with potential adjustments based on the Quebec election outcomes.

The expansion of Labrador’s mining industry is anticipated with the additional power supply, supported by funding from Ottawa. The agreement also includes provisions for studying a new wind project and enhancing transmission lines.

Amid uncertainties related to the Quebec election, Fréchette emphasized the benefits of the agreement in terms of job creation and energy supply for both Newfoundland and Quebec. The agreement is seen as vital for the economic development of the region.
