“Øresund Bridge: Explore Denmark and Sweden in a Day”

A unique opportunity awaits travelers eager to explore Denmark and Sweden in a single day, thanks to an impressive ‘disappearing bridge’ that connects the two countries. Known as Øresund in Danish and Öresund in Swedish, this architectural marvel transitions from a bridge to a tunnel, creating the illusion of vanishing beneath the water’s surface. Inaugurated in 2000 by Queen Margrethe II of Denmark and King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden, the Øresund Bridge links the vibrant cities of Copenhagen and Malmö, standing as the second longest bridge in Europe after the Kerch Bridge.

Beyond its functional purpose, the bridge symbolizes unity and collaboration between nations, exemplified during the Eurovision Song Contest in 2013. Comprising an 8km bridge, a 4km underwater tunnel doubling as an artificial reef, and a 4km manmade island named Peberholm, the structure welcomes an average of 70,000 daily visitors. Jointly crafted by Swedish company Svedab and Danish firm A/S, the Øresund Bridge features a motorway exit for authorized vehicles and a helicopter pad for emergencies, with toll fees varying based on the mode of transportation.

Spanning approximately 16km in length, the Øresund Bridge was constructed over five years at a cost of £2.3 billion (£4.8 billion today). Incorporating a tunnel design mitigated potential radio signal interference from nearby Copenhagen Airport and ensured a reliable shipping channel regardless of weather conditions. Celebrated for its economic contributions to Denmark and Sweden, the bridge has played a pivotal role in developing a thriving trading region, impacting the lives of 4.2 million individuals within the Øresund Region.

Recognized with the prestigious IABSE Outstanding Structure Award, the Øresund Bridge has also left an indelible mark in popular culture, featuring prominently in the acclaimed TV series, The Bridge. As a testament to its enduring success, the bridge continues to resonate as a significant landmark that unites two nations and fosters regional prosperity.
