Patients will have access to specialized care for prostate, menopause, and vision issues through newly introduced NHS Online hospitals. Upon referral from their general practitioner, individuals can consult with experts via video appointments using the NHS app. This initiative aims to expedite access to specialized healthcare, reduce waiting times, and enable patients to consult with doctors nationwide without unnecessary hospital visits.
During a speech at the Labour conference in September, Keir Starmer highlighted the upcoming launch of NHS Online services for nine common conditions, with the first patients scheduled for next year. These conditions include women’s health concerns like severe menopausal symptoms, menstrual issues indicative of endometriosis or fibroids, as well as prostate conditions such as enlargement and elevated prostate-specific antigen levels. Additionally, eye problems like cataracts, glaucoma, and macular degeneration will be covered. The service will also offer support for other painful conditions like iron deficiency anemia and inflammatory bowel disease.
While tests and procedures will still occur at local healthcare facilities, the new system allows clinicians to remotely review patient records. Face-to-face appointments will remain an option for patients needing physical examinations or procedures, either at hospitals or nearby hubs. NHS Online aims to enhance accessibility to healthcare services and streamline the treatment process for patients.
Professor Stella Vig, NHS England’s national clinical director for elective care, emphasized the positive impact of faster diagnosis and treatment access on individuals coping with painful conditions. Dr. Sue Mann, NHS England’s national clinical director in women’s health, stressed the importance of quicker access to effective treatments for women dealing with menstrual issues or menopause symptoms. The NHS App, already available for download on smartphones and tablets, offers various features like ordering prescriptions, managing appointments, and viewing GP health records to enhance patient convenience and engagement with healthcare services.
