“New Probe Seeks More Victims of ‘Monster of Avignon'”

A fresh investigation is set to be launched by detectives into unresolved cases linked to the notorious ‘Monster of Avignon’. Dominique Pelicot, who was convicted of aggravated rape and sentenced to 20 years in prison in 2024, will be the primary focus of this new inquiry by a cold case unit. Authorities in Nanterre, near Paris, have revealed that the probe aims to uncover additional crimes potentially committed by Pelicot over the past decades, with a specific focus on identifying other potential victims.

The trial of Pelicot garnered global attention after shocking details emerged, revealing how he drugged his wife, Gisele, and orchestrated a series of assaults by numerous strangers while she was unconscious. Gisele Pelicot, who bravely revealed her identity to bring the case into the public eye, has since become a prominent advocate for survivors of sexual abuse in France, emphasizing a shared struggle for justice.

The heinous crimes against Gisele spanned from 2011 to 2020, occurring at the family residence in Mazan, involving 72 different individuals, some of whom were acquainted with her. Out of the 51 men who stood trial, nearly all were found guilty of various sexual offenses against Gisele.

In addition to the conviction for aggravated rape, Pelicot is also under investigation for two other serious offenses: the rape and murder of Sophie Narme, a real estate agent in Paris in 1991, and an attempted rape in Villeparisis in 1999. The authorities have been scrutinizing Pelicot’s potential involvement in these cases since October 2022, suggesting substantial evidence against him.

While Pelicot has partially confessed to one incident where his DNA was found at the scene, he vehemently denies any connection to the 1991 rape and murder case. Detectives have noted significant parallels in the modus operandi of the two attacks, leading to speculation that the same individual may be responsible for both crimes.

Legal representatives involved in the cases have highlighted striking similarities between the 1991 and 1999 incidents, suggesting a potential link between them. Pelicot’s lawyer maintained his client’s denial of any acquaintance with Sophie Narme and provided a different interpretation of the events surrounding the 1999 case.
