A man who committed a sexual assault on a woman during a flight to Belfast has narrowly avoided a jail sentence. Stephen McClatchey, 33, was given a 10-month probation order for touching the victim inappropriately while under the influence of alcohol. The judge at Belfast Magistrates’ Court described his behavior as “outrageous” and “nasty.” McClatchey, residing in Larne, Co Antrim, admitted to the assault on September 13, 2024.
According to reports, McClatchey became disruptive after drinking on the flight from London to Belfast City Airport. Cabin crew refused to serve him more alcohol due to his inappropriate behavior towards other passengers. Subsequently, he targeted the woman sitting next to him, grabbing her breast without consent, causing her significant distress.
Although the police were alerted, McClatchey had already left the airport before they arrived. Initially, he claimed the victim had fabricated the incident due to lack of interest, but he later acknowledged the assault. His defense attorney stated that McClatchey has little memory of the event and has since stopped drinking.
The judge expressed doubts about McClatchey’s initial explanation and noted the severity of the offense, suggesting a potential prison term. Despite this, considering the defendant’s clean record and positive recommendations, a 10-month probation order was issued. As part of the sentence, McClatchey must undergo rehabilitation activities for 20 days and adhere to 100 days of alcohol monitoring. Additionally, he was instructed to pay £500 in compensation to the victim.
