“Legendary Voice of Calgary Flames, Peter Maher, Remembered”

The Calgary Flames radio broadcasts lost a legendary voice with the passing of Peter Maher at the age of 79. Maher, who served as the team’s play-by-play commentator for over three decades, announced his retirement after the 2013-14 NHL season.

Known for iconic catchphrases like “Yeah, baby!” and “You can put it in the win column!”, Maher’s passion for his work and dedication to the Flames were evident throughout his hall-of-fame career. His memorable calls, including during the Flames’ 1989 Stanley Cup victory and their 2004 finals appearance, endeared him to fans in Calgary.

The Flames paid tribute to Maher, acknowledging his significant impact on the team and the community. Described as an ambassador for the Flames, Maher’s warmth, generosity, and love for the game touched countless lives beyond the broadcast booth.

Born in Campbellton, N.B., Maher’s broadcasting career included calling Toronto Maple Leafs games before he became the official voice of the Flames in 1980. Colleagues, like Rob Kerr, praised Maher’s storytelling abilities and his journalistic approach to broadcasting, highlighting his commitment to delivering authentic and true commentary.

Throughout his career, Maher’s contributions extended beyond the Flames, encompassing NHL All-Star games, the 2005 IIHF World Championship, and the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver. Recognized for his outstanding work, Maher was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2006 and honored with the Foster Hewitt Memorial Award.

Following his retirement, Maher’s legacy lives on in the Scotiabank Saddledome, where the broadcast booth bears his name. Additionally, he inspired an annual award presented to Flames players who embody sincerity, integrity, dedication, and respect, further solidifying his lasting impact on the team and the sport.
