Keir Starmer engaged in discussions with Volodymyr Zelensky today, as the Ukrainian leader geared up for crucial in-person talks with Donald Trump. The anticipated meeting between the US President and Mr. Zelensky aims to address the ongoing four-year conflict between Moscow and Kyiv at Mr. Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida. Prior to this gathering, Mr. Trump announced on Truth Social that he had a “highly productive telephone conversation” with the Russian leader, Vladimir Putin.
While en route to Florida, Mr. Zelensky conversed with Mr. Starmer, who has been collaborating with European allies to form a Coalition of the Willing. This coalition of nations has committed to overseeing any potential peace agreement between Moscow and Kyiv. Expressing gratitude to Keir, Mr. Zelensky shared on X, “Thank you, Keir, for the ongoing coordination! I began my day in Florida with a detailed call with UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer.”
He further stated, “We discussed the preparations for the upcoming meeting with President Trump, along with our interactions with European partners. I updated him on the frontline situation and the repercussions of Russian attacks. The support from the United Kingdom is highly valued. We will maintain communication!”
A spokesperson from Downing Street remarked, “The Prime Minister conversed with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy today. The Prime Minister reiterated the UK’s steadfast support for Ukraine and its dedication to achieving a fair and enduring peace. Both leaders condemned Russia’s brutal and illegal invasion, as well as the recent assault on Kyiv.
“Both leaders appreciated the ongoing diplomatic endeavors and praised President Trump’s continuous involvement in securing peace. The Prime Minister and President Zelenskyy agreed to stay closely connected in the upcoming days.”
Earlier, Mr. Zelensky, following discussions with European leaders over the weekend after extensive diplomatic efforts, highlighted that significant decisions could be made before the New Year. He urged Ukraine’s allies to sustain pressure on Putin’s Russia to face the consequences of their aggression amid ongoing assaults on Ukrainian cities.
During the high-level discussions with President Trump, the two leaders are anticipated to deliberate on a 20-point proposal to end the violent conflict. Mr. Zelensky has previously indicated that a peace plan is nearly finalized and aims to touch upon an “economic agreement” and “territorial matters” with Mr. Trump.
He also mentioned that the draft peace plan includes a US commitment to offer assurances akin to NATO’s Article 5, which guarantees a collective military response from the US and its allies in case of an attack on Ukraine. However, crucial details, particularly territorial concessions, are yet to be ironed out between the two leaders.
