Ian Botham earned over £225,000 by auctioning his prized collection from the 1981 Ashes series. The former England cricket icon sold more than 240 items from his illustrious career at an auction in 2023.
With England aiming for a comeback in the current Ashes series, fans may draw inspiration from Botham’s historic Ashes victory with the team four decades ago. During the auction held two years ago at the KIA Oval’s Long Room, Botham bid farewell to several significant items from his Ashes triumph.
Notably, the red cricket ball that helped Botham secure five wickets for one run at Edgbaston was sold for £20,000. Additionally, a stump retrieved by Botham after the iconic Headingley win fetched £11,000, while his personal man of the match medal was sold for £19,000.
The pivotal Headingley victory over 40 years ago marked a turning point for the England squad, with Botham’s remarkable performance overturning 500/1 odds to set up an improbable win. Botham’s unbeaten 149 runs and Bob Willis’ eight wickets orchestrated one of cricket’s most memorable comebacks.
Among the auctioned items, Botham’s player of the season medal was sold for £8,000, his England test blazer for £1,800, and a Somerset cap for £2,700. Notably, a ‘baggy green’ cap gifted by former Australian captain Allan Border was sold for £13,000.
Furthermore, Botham parted ways with his England blue day one top from the 1992 World Cup in Australia for £11,000 and his BBC SPOTY Lifetime award received in 2004 for £3,600.
The decision to auction off his memorabilia was prompted by Botham’s desire to downsize, according to auctioneer Tim Knight. The auction was managed by Knight’s Auctioneers of Norwich, Norfolk.
Knight emphasized the allure of items linked to the 1981 Ashes, known as Botham’s Ashes, attributing their popularity to Botham’s legendary status in cricket. He noted Botham’s immense impact on the sport, both statistically and through his captivating on-field presence, entertainment value, and unyielding spirit.
