“From Longing to Belonging: A Vancouver Journey of Reflection”

After receiving a song link from an ex-partner quoting “Only know you love her when you let her go,” Caitlyn Moony reflects on her journey to make Vancouver her home. Despite the initial allure of the city’s beauty and promises of a vibrant lifestyle, her experience took a different turn.

Upon her relocation from Johannesburg to Vancouver in 2018, Moony’s expectations clashed with reality. Struggling to establish a network and lacking the coveted “Canadian experience” for job opportunities, she found herself in a demanding admin role with a meager income. The initial enchantment with the city’s natural splendor faded as she grappled with the challenges of high living costs and isolation.

Loneliness became a prevailing theme as Moony longed for the sense of community she had experienced in previous locations. The city’s slower pace, coupled with relentless rain and a lack of social connections, intensified her feelings of detachment. Eventually, the pandemic further exacerbated her isolation, prompting her to seek solace in the bustling city life of London, where she had resided before.

However, London’s vibrancy led Moony to realize a transformation within herself. Her time in Vancouver had quietly shaped her into a more introspective and grounded individual, embracing the serenity of the West Coast lifestyle. Despite the city’s imperfections and challenges, Moony now seeks to reconcile with Vancouver, acknowledging its flaws while yearning for a sense of belonging and simplicity in her relationship with the city.

Returning to Vancouver amidst a winter storm, Moony contemplates the possibility of rekindling her connection with the city, recognizing the growth and mutual understanding that time and distance have fostered. Embracing the idea of acceptance and setting new boundaries, she reflects on her evolving relationship with Vancouver, hinting at a desire for a renewed sense of belonging and companionship within its midst.
