France’s navy, with assistance from the British, has intercepted a sanctioned oil tanker believed to be operating under a false flag while sailing from Russia. The vessel, named the Grinch, was apprehended in the Mediterranean following collaborative efforts between French and British maritime authorities. French President Emmanuel Macron confirmed the operation, emphasizing the tanker’s violation of international sanctions and false flag usage.
The French navy has taken the seized tanker to port for further inspection. Oil revenues play a crucial role in the Russian economy, enabling President Vladimir Putin to fund military actions against Ukraine without causing economic instability. France, along with other nations, has committed to cracking down on the illicit shadow fleet of oil tankers, estimated to exceed 400 vessels. Efforts are underway to establish agreements with flag-carrying nations to facilitate the boarding of such vessels.
The intercepted ship was flying a false flag from the Comoros islands, crewed by individuals from India. The vessel was stopped in the western Mediterranean near the Spanish town of Almeria. Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper affirmed the readiness of British armed forces to support allies in intercepting vessels associated with the Russian shadow fleet.
Recent collaboration between British and US forces resulted in the interception of the Russian tanker Marinera, which breached sanctions. Legal considerations for military intervention in boarding such vessels are being evaluated. The UK government advocates for a complete ban on Russian oil shipments to tighten control over the Kremlin’s illicit maritime activities.
