“Nurse Suspended for Watching True Crime Videos During Shift”

A nurse, Sandra Marie Young, was discovered to have neglected critical patient observations by watching true crime videos on her phone during her shift. Young falsely claimed to have completed the necessary checks when, in reality, she was engrossed in non-fiction documentaries at the hospital. Consequently, her professional registration has been suspended for six months after a panel upheld three charges against her. Despite being a registered nurse for 40 years, Young’s actions were deemed dishonest and led to a finding of misconduct by an NMC tribunal.

The incidents occurred at Nuffield Hospital in Newcastle, Tyneside, involving a failure to conduct observations after a patient collapsed. Young inaccurately reported the patient’s condition and failed to escalate concerns to the appropriate medical personnel. The tribunal determined that Young’s behavior compromised patient safety and amounted to impaired fitness to practice as a nurse.

Following her resignation a day after the incident, Young has not worked as a nurse. The panel heard testimony from a ward manager highlighting the impact of Young’s negligence on patient safety. Proper observations could have identified critical changes in the patient’s condition, triggering necessary medical interventions. The panel concluded that Young knowingly misled others by falsifying records, indicating dishonesty in her actions.

Witnesses testified to Young’s inappropriate behavior, including watching videos and eating during working hours. Despite acknowledging her wrongdoing and expressing no intention to return to nursing, Young failed to provide a reflective statement or take steps to address her misconduct. As a result, the panel decided to suspend Young, citing her failure to remedy her behavior or acknowledge the seriousness of her actions.
