Ex-Jockey Luke Tarrant Faces Armed Robbery Charges

A former prominent jockey, Luke Tarrant, has been detained in custody and is facing three charges of armed robbery. Tarrant, who is currently under a 12-month racing disqualification for a separate offense, was denied bail during his recent court appearance in Caloundra, Queensland, Australia.

According to Racenet.com, Tarrant has been charged with three counts of robbery while armed, unlawfully entering premises with intent to commit a serious offense, and possession of dangerous drugs. The charge of robbery carries a maximum penalty of 14 years in prison, which can increase to a life sentence for cases involving armed robbery, collaboration with others, or the use of personal violence.

Tarrant is scheduled to appear in court again on March 19. The 31-year-old jockey, known for his past achievements with 502 wins, including three Group race victories, last competed in August. One of his significant triumphs was in 2015 when he won the Gold Coast Magic Millions 2YO Classic.

In 2020, Tarrant was suspended for six months after confessing to assaulting another jockey in the weighing room. Additionally, in October of the previous year, he was disqualified for one year for failing to cooperate with a stewards’ inquiry regarding alleged falsification of health assessment documents used for licensing.

The case was referred to Queensland’s Racing Integrity Commission, where Tarrant was directed to provide a plea. However, after four weeks, no response was received. The Commission panel ruled that Tarrant’s behavior was a serious breach of the integrity framework that protects participant welfare and maintains public trust in wagering.

The stewards concluded that a 12-month disqualification was necessary due to Tarrant’s actions. The disqualification would be effective from October 8, 2025, to October 8, 2026.
