At least eight individuals have lost their lives, with over 80 individuals unaccounted for following a devastating landslide that struck Java island in Indonesia. The tragic event occurred in the West Bandung district of West Java province following days of heavy rainfall that led to the bursting of river banks on Saturday. The most severely impacted area, Pasir Kuning, witnessed the recovery of eight bodies, with numerous residences buried under mud and debris.
According to Abdul Muhari, the spokesperson for the national disaster management agency, a search and rescue operation is currently in progress to locate the 82 missing residents. Fortunately, 24 individuals were able to escape the disaster. Rescue teams were seen navigating through thick mud, rocks, rubble, and uprooted trees in their efforts to locate the missing individuals.
In the immediate aftermath of the incident, emergency response teams were dispatched, as confirmed by Teten Ali Mungku Engkun, who leads the disaster management office in West Java. Evacuations were carried out for residents residing near the affected area due to the heightened risk of additional landslides.
Engkun highlighted the challenges faced by the ongoing search and rescue operations due to unstable ground conditions and continuous heavy rainfall. Residents living in landslide-prone regions have been advised to remain vigilant for signs of shifting soil or unusual sounds, signaling the need for immediate evacuation.
