A leading defense analyst has addressed assertions regarding the influence of Donald Trump on Britain’s nuclear arsenal amidst the growing tension surrounding Greenland. Donald Trump recently issued a concerning statement indicating a shift away from peace considerations just before announcing tariffs on the UK and other NATO nations due to their deployment of troops in Danish territory.
The dispute with the US has reignited discussions about the extent of White House control over the UK’s £23 billion Trident nuclear program, which relies on American technology. Even Keir Starmer emphasized the importance of maintaining a strong defense relationship with the US for national security.
Professor Anthony Glees, a politics expert at the University of Buckingham, contested the notion that the UK is solely reliant on the US for defense capabilities. He clarified that while the UK depends on the US for Trident missile maintenance, it retains control over the weapons and can deploy them independently if necessary.
Glees criticized Trump’s actions undermining NATO and warned of potential repercussions on American interests in Europe. He suggested exploring joint nuclear deterrent options with France as the Trident-carrying Vanguard-class submarines near retirement.
Amid concerns about US-controlled F-35 fighter jets, Glees reassured that the RAF has alternative aircraft options. He criticized Trump’s letter to the Norwegian Prime Minister as indicative of cognitive decline and highlighted the independence of the Nobel committee from government influence.
