“Accounts Manager Embezzles £767K for Gambling Habit”

Susanne Redhead, an accounts manager at a family business in Newcastle, embezzled £767,000 to fuel her gambling addiction, causing severe financial distress to the company and endangering the livelihoods of her colleagues. Her fraudulent activities were uncovered when she siphoned £100,000 in just one week, followed by a staggering £363,000 theft in December 2024 alone.

After being confronted, Redhead admitted to her actions, attributing them to her gambling habit. An investigation revealed that over a span of 445 transactions from November 2023 to January 2025, she had stolen the substantial sum. During the Christmas break in 2024, taking advantage of the office closure, she depleted the company accounts entirely.

The managing director expressed shock and dismay over Redhead’s betrayal, emphasizing the severe impact on the company’s financial stability and the trust that had been placed in her. Redhead, who had been with the company for 15 years and was considered a trusted employee, was sentenced to three years in prison after pleading guilty to theft.

In court, it was disclosed that Redhead’s gambling problem led her to steal the money with the misguided belief that she could repay it. Her defense attorney highlighted her remorse and the absence of any personal gain from the thefts, emphasizing her deep regret for breaching the trust placed in her. Legal proceedings under the Proceeds of Crime Act will aim to recover any assets she may possess.
